A pair of glands that produce the male reproductive cells and testosterone. In fetal life the testes develop in the abdomen, then descend into an external sac, the scrotum. A testis is composed of about 800 coiled seminiferous tubules whose linings contain cells that develop into sperm. These tubules merge into a larger tube called the epididymis that leads out of the testis into the vas deferens. Between the seminiferous tubules there is interstitial tissue that secretes the male sex hormone testosterone, which stimulates the development of the male reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics.
The average size of the adult testis is 5x3 cm, equivalent to a volume of 25 ml. The lower size limit for a mature testis is about 4x2.5 cm, corresponding to a volume of approximately 15 ml. Typically, XXY males have testes in the range 2-4 ml, and less than 3X2 cm, a range that is consistent with pre-pubertal males. The testes should be measured (length and width) by using a Prader orchidometer or calipers:
