Beginning at puberty the pituitary signals the testes to begin producing sperm and testosterone by the hormones Follicle Stimulating hormone (FSH) for sperm, and Luteinizing hormone (LH) for testosterone. FSH stimulates the sertoli cells, while LH stimulates the leydig cells. Once sufficient levels of testosterone and sperm are reached, a feedback system shuts down the LH and FSH production in the pituitary gland. XXYs typically have high amounts of both LH and FSH and low testosterone.
Little is known about what effects extended periods of production of both LH and FSH have on the body, other than an enlargement of the sella turcica or Turk's saddle, which the pituitary sits in.
