A disorder in which the normal replenishment of old bone tissue is disrupted, resulting in weakened bones and an increased risk of fracture. It is most common in women after menopause, although it can also occur in younger women and men. It is aggravated by a variety of factors, including smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, a sedentary lifestyle, and for XXYs, low testosterone.
